Back in 2013, a Mashable article by Tedd Wasserman attempted to pin down the definition of the relatively new concept called “contextual marketing”. Wasserman wrote that while all advertisements are inherently contextual, meaning they all take place within a certain context for consumers, contextual marketing uses behavioral targeting to align with the media in which it appears.
