Posted by Fiona McCarthy on Apr 7, 2016 8:42:52 AM

Most marketers know that creating personalized content is key to engaging with consumers. It’s intuitive; consumers are much more likely to click on an ad that tells them a relatable story than one that doesn’t. BLAB:Predicts Takes Statistical Approach To NLP

Posted by Stefan Papp on Mar 30, 2016 12:35:44 PM

We frequently encounter skepticism when we tell data people that in order to make the best possible classification engine for Blab- we decided to throw out natural language processing (NLP) and employ our own techniques.

Well, ok, maybe we didn't throw NLP out altogether; we actually rejected traditional linguistic NLP in favor of a statistical approach to it. And why not? Microsoft Research did the same thing in 2005 when it disbanded its NLP group and headed in the statistical direction.

Moving away from linguistic NLP was not a whimsical decision in any way: we considered traditional NLP very carefully before we determined it was not the vehicle that would take us to our destination. In this post we discuss the challenges and thought process that ultimately led us to choose statistical rather than linguistic NLP.

Blab Releases Conversation-Based Data Segments for Paid Media

Posted by Fiona McCarthy on Mar 28, 2016 3:30:05 PM

Recently, Blab announced the global public release of the BLAB:Predicts platform and an industry-first technology, Conversation-Based Data Segments.

This new feature enables agencies, brands and publishers to use predictive data to drive campaign engagement and significantly reduce inefficient spending on programmatic and paid social media buys.

With Conversation-Based Data Segments, brand messaging is targeted directly into content topics people are engaging with most at any given moment- effectively delivering live audience segmentation in real-time.  As opposed to standalone traditional cookie-based targeting that depends on historical data that is largely out of date by the time a consumer is identified or targeted.

What's a Brand to Do? Ad Blocking and Future of Digital Advertising

Posted by Fiona McCarthy on Mar 7, 2016 9:42:30 AM

Consumers are blocking annoying and intrunsive ads like never before, with an estimated 10% to 15% of all Internet users actively blocking digital ads. Some even claim this may mean the end for digital advertising. But let's not debate whether ad blockers spell the end for digital advertising, but rather, let's ask why advertisers settle for intrusive and annoying ads in the first place.

BLAB:Predicts Election 2016 - TRUMP vs. CLINTON

Posted by Fiona McCarthy on Feb 26, 2016 12:51:06 PM

It's no secret that social media has come become a highly influential platform for candidates during election cycles. Take, for example, Barak Obama's famous use of social media to win the presidential election in 2008. Or the 2010 Facebook study where a single banner ad influenced an additional 60,000 people to turn out to vote. Results from a January 2016 survey indicate that social media ads are much more effective at targeting millennials than print ads. And with 80% of millenials on Facebook, this comes as no surprise.

Contextual Marketing 2.0

Posted by Fiona McCarthy on Feb 1, 2016 2:04:30 PM

Back in 2013, a Mashable article by Tedd Wasserman attempted to pin down the definition of the relatively new concept of “contextual marketing”. Wasserman wrote that while all advertisements take place within a certain context for consumers, contextual marketing uses behavioral targeting to align with the media in which it appears.
